Normally car makers tease the media with design sketches and dark photos before unveiling a new model - but Bentley has taken an aural approach.

In a video previewing 'Bentley's potent new soundtrack' its upcoming sports car is seen (but mainly heard) driving at high speeds around a deserted test facility late at night.

The pounding engine noise previews the turbocharged 4-litre V8 which will be introduced into Bentley's Continental GT range from next year, selling alongside the existing engine.

It's a much smaller motor than the 6-litre W12 currently fitted in the GT, and has been chosen because it will slash CO2 emissions and allow much better fuel consumption.

Bentleys won't be cheap to run, for now, but it will be much more socially acceptable than the current engine, which averages just 17mpg.

Bentley isn't a company likely to compromise on performance either, so expect zero to 62mph in around five seconds and a top speed well over 170mph.

Full details will be announced ahead of the Detroit Motor Show in January, where the latest Bentley is expected to debut. To see and hear the clip, just log on to www.autotrader.co.uk
