Bentley has announced its new Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible V8 models will have 500bhp and a top speed of more than 180mph.

They will go on sale alongside the current 567bhp W12-engined models, but should deliver 40 per cent better fuel economy and lower emissions, allowing for a touring range of over 500 miles.

Bentley quotes its zero to 62mph acceleration as taking sub-5 seconds, not far off the 4.4 seconds of the current Continental GT. The V8 range features four-wheel drive, which sends 60 per cent of power to the rear wheels in normal conditions.

The twin-turbocharged 4-litre V8 features technology which allows it to run on four cylinders under a light throttle. When more power is required all eight cylinders fire instantly.

Both the GT and GTC V8 are distinguished by a gloss black front grille, with a chrome frame, red enamel Bentley 'B' badge and a distinctive lower bumper with three air intakes.

At the rear, unique chrome 'figure eight' exhaust tailpipes, a dark lower bumper and 20-inch alloy wheels in Diamond Black (exclusive to the V8) or Diamond Silver are said to give the V8 a more contemporary and sporty look.

The V8 gives Bentley customers the option of a more affordable and less polluting GT or GTC, without a large performance penalty - and it's likely to become the Crewe firm's most popular model.

First launched in 2003, the Continental range has been exceptionally successful for Bentley, selling more than 50,000 models worldwide and making Bentley's UK factory the largest producer of 12-cylinder engines in the world.
