The new Audi RS5 is the latest in a long line of hot 'RS'-badged models, which started with the Porsche-engineered RS2 Avant back in 1994.

Fast forward 16 years and the new RS5 packs a 4.2-litre V8 under its relatively compact bonnet, which produces a massive 450bhp. What's even more remarkable is that it manages this without turbochargers.

It relies on state-of-the-art direct injection and its ability to rev to 8,500rpm to produce its power. A new, seven-speed, twin-clutch gearbox transmits the power to all four wheels via a redesigned quattro system.

The result is a 0-62mph time of just 4.6 seconds when using the launch control programme. Top speed is limited to 155mph, or 174mph depending on specification. Fuel economy is claimed to average 26.2mpg. Expect rather less if using all that power.

Slowing down shouldn't be a problem, thanks to massive brakes which can be specified with F1-inspired carbon-ceramic discs. The huge anchors hide behind 19- or 20-inch wheels which are so wide that the wheel arches have been redesigned to accommodate them.

The boxy arches are a stylistic nod to the iconic, original Audi Quattro that made its debut 30 years ago at the Geneva motor show, where the RS5 will officially be unveiled.

Other design changes include deeper front and rear bumpers with a choice of either silver or black trim and a rear spoiler that lifts from the boot lid at speeds above 75 mph.

Sales will start in the spring, with a basic price of around £68,000.
