The baby Audi A1 is all set to make its world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 2. With its sights set firmly on the ever-popular Mini, Audi's A1 will be available from around £13,000 when sales start in October.

Running costs promise to be low too, with the1.6 TDI diesel returning 72.3mpg, while all will qualify for the road tax Band B, thanks to CO2 emissions of 119g/km for the petrol models and 102g/km for the diesel.

With a choice of 1.2- or 1.4-litre TFSI turbocharged, direct-injection engines with 85bhp and 120bhp respectively, as well a 1.6 TDI diesel, the A1 shadows the Mini's every move. A seven-speed, twin-clutch DSG gearbox will also be available.

While not confirmed, a hot 200bhp S1, along with five-door and convertible variants are expected to arrive next year. By this time there promises to be an A1 for everyone.

Like the Mini, the A1 will be hugely customisable. As well as 'SE', 'Sport' and 'S-line' trim levels, there will be a choice of ten exterior colours, three contrasting finishes for the distinctive roof arch and five interior colours. Start dipping into the vast options list and it's unlikely that any two A1s will be alike.

Despite its size, the A1 will be available with some features that would usually be the reserve of much larger Audis. Distinctive xenon headlights with LED running lights, a Bose sound system with DAB radio and 3D satellite navigation from the Audi A8 will all be available.
