Volkswagen has released full details and prices for its new more efficient and better equipped Touareg. Despite being 40mm longer, the new Touareg weighs 200kg less than the outgoing car and is 20 per cent more efficient.
Power is provided by a new 3-litre V6 TDI and a 4.2-litre V8 TDI engine from launch. Volkswagen expects the 238bhp 3-litre diesel engine to be the biggest seller. Thanks to standard start-stop and brake energy regeneration functions, it is capable of returning 38.2mpg while emitting 195g/km of CO2.
The range-topping 4.2-litre engine produces 337bhp and 590lb/ft of pulling power, while emitting 239g/km and averaging 31mpg.
A hybrid option will join the line-up from next month and will combine a supercharged 331bhp 3-litre V6 TSI petrol engine with an electric motor generating 46bhp, resulting in a total output of 377bhp and 428lb/ft of torque. It will be capable of returning 34.4mpg while emitting 193g/km of CO2. All models are fitted with an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox.
It comes in four trim levels - SE, Altitude, Escape and Hybrid. The entry-level SE model gets leather trim, a touch-screen sat-nav with DAB radio, six airbags, dual-zone climate control and 4Motion four wheel drive as standard. The new Volkswagen Touareg is available to order now, with first deliveries in October.
