The Alfa Romeo Brera coupe and its drop-top Spider sister have been treated to a pair of new engines and the option of a new trim level.

The new engines - a 200bhp 1750 TBi petrol and a 170bhp 2.0 JTDm diesel - were first seen in Alfa's 159 range and offer not only more power but also lower emissions and improved fuel economy.

The 1.7-litre 1750 TBi produces 189k/km CO2 in the Brera and 192g/km when fitted to the slightly heavier Spider, placing it in VED tax band J. Combined fuel economy is 34.9mpg for the Brera and 34.5mpg in the Spider, while 0-62mph takes 7.7 and 7.8 seconds respectively.

The new 2.0 JTDm diesel is, as you would expect, more economical, managing to travel an average of 52.3 miles on every gallon of fuel.

All body and engine combinations can be specified in Italia independent specification which features matt titanium paint, black 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, carbon fibre-effect interior trim and satellite navigation.

The existing 2.2 JTS and 3.2 JTS V6 petrol engines and 2.4 JTDm diesel are still available. Prices for the Brera start at £25,330 for the 2.2 JTS and rise to £35,840 for the 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 Q-Tronic Italia Independent - equivalent Spiders cost £2,000 more.
