German tuner 9ff is famous for reworking Porsche 911s from the ground up and has unveiled first details of its hotly anticipated 9ff GT9-R - potentially the world's fastest production car

The standard car gets 750bhp, the second one up gets 987bhp and the range-topper gets a Veyron-troubling 1,120bhp - and a 257.3mph top speed.

This makes it 1mph faster than the fastest production car on the planet, the American-built SSC Ultimate Aero which tops 256mph.

The full-fat 9ff GT9-R boasts a 4-litre six-cylinder 'boxer' style engine - planted in the middle of the car - and a six-speed manual.

Now, in case you're wondering, the 9ff was purely built for top speed: it'll hit 62mph in 2.9 seconds (Veyron 2.5s) and will clear 180mph in around 15 seconds.

If the 9ff hits its claimed top speed, it will sit at the very top of the supercar tree as the fastest car on Earth, at least until Manchester-based Keating finishes its TKR, which hit an unofficial 260.1mph earlier this year at the Mojave desert in California.

The Brit supercar maker plans to return to the USA with the 7-litre V8-powered Keating TKR along with a Guinness World Record official to make another record-breaking run.

But they'd better be quick - SSC claims its new Aero TT will be able to hit 270mph, putting all other contenders in the shade considerably.

All well and good, but we reckon a Toyota Aygo with a big exhaust and racing stripes will comfortably hit 300mph.
