The maddest Trabants
07.12.2009 - Adrian Hearn
Let's be honest here, as a car, the Trabant was a load of rubbish. It had a belching 600cc engine which enabled a top speed of just 62mph - with this speed arriving in 36 seconds. But despite its ridiculously poor performance the Trabant is an icon for Eastern Bloc motoring. The Trabant was built by Sachsenring between 1957 and 1991 with more than 3 million rolling off the production line.
With so many of these humble little motors finding homes over a 34-year period, it was a sure-fire certainty some of the Trabants would get modified. We just didn't think any would be carted around by horses. For a host of wacky Trabant pictures, check out our gallery.
